Hey, guys; I hope everyone had a great weekend and are ready to catch up on some Golden Grizzlies news! This is officially the first full week of my sports column and I will fill you in on everything that went down athletics wise this past week.
Starting with the Women’s soccer team, they began the week last Sunday with a 1-0 loss to Toledo on Legacy/Alumni night at Oakland. Fast forward to Saturday the 22nd where the women went toe to toe with Horizon league rival Cleveland State. After 90 minutes and double overtime, no winner would be found and they ended in a 1-1 tie. Taylor Thalheimer scored the only goal for the Golden Grizzlies.
For the men’s soccer team they went 1-0-1 on the week with a couple of impressive defensive showings. On Childhood Cancer Awareness Night, Oakland took on Dayton which ended in a 1-1 tie. Napoleon Outlaw III scored the only goal for Oakland and I wish I had as cool of a name as Napoleon. Then on Saturday the 22nd, Oakland put away Duquesne with a score of 2-0. Goals came from Jacob Moore and again by Napoleon Outlaw III. (What a week for the Redshirt Freshman)
Cross Country was off for the week but they get right back into the action this Saturday the 29th with the Loyola Lakefront Invitational in Chicago.
The Volleyball team kicked off Horizon League play this past week and have had quite the busy schedule. Last saturday they took down Saint Francis (PA) 3-1, led by the senior Aleksandra Malek from Pszow Poland who had 15 total kills. Next up was Youngstown State with the start of Horizon League action and the Golden Grizzlies went to work. Oakland made quick work of the Penguins with a 3-0 sweep. It was a great start to interleague play but it came to a crashing stop on sunday afternoon. Oakland came out flat against Cleveland State and got handed their own 0-3 sweep. Ending the week 2-1 with the more league play coming up next week is not a bad week for the Golden Grizzlies.
Finally, here we go, it’s football time! The Oakland Club Football team coming off of a massive 50-6 win over the Wright State Raiders were eager to get into action against the Michigan State Spartans. The Golden Grizzlies did not disappoint a huge crowd of Oakland fans as they went to work on the Spartans and came away with a 35-0 win. The football team now looks ahead to this coming Saturday where they will take on the Eastern Michigan Eagles.
That just about wraps it up for this week in Golden Grizzlies news! I hope you guys enjoyed it and we will see you right back here next weekend.
