Golden Grizzly fans roaring together as a home win over Green Bay comes into its final seconds. A jam-packed O’rena set the scene for a 90-78 win to advance to 4-2 in Horizon League play.

The first half of the game was a back and forth performance by Tray Maddox from Oakland and Kameron Hankerson from Green Bay. With seven minutes and 28 seconds left in the first half, the score was tied 23-23. Sophomore guard Karmari Newman led the Black and Gold from the three point arc. With two minutes left in the first half, Oakland was only down by four. Ending the first half with the Golden Grizzlies down by just two, the start of the second half began with Oakland ball.

Xavier Hill-Mais from Oakland tied the game at the 17 minute mark in the second half.The Black and Gold took the lead with by three 48-45 early in the second. The Grizz Gang was begging their beloved team to keep going. Let’s set the scene for the rest of this thrilling game. With 14 minutes left, Oakland marched their lead out even further with help from Newman who was having a career night. At the ten minute mark in the second half, The Black Gold in the lead 58-49. Oakland was looking like they might just be able to grind this big win out.

Oakland continued to work hard and stopped Green Bay from going on any runs with 7 minutes left to spare. Cumberland continued to keep Oakland in the lead with a massive three pointer. The Dynamic duo between Cumberland and Newman gave the Black and Gold fans quite a night. Oakland proved valiant and downed Green Bay by a final score of 90-78.

It was a huge win for the Golden Grizzlies and Head Coach Greg Kampe could not be more pleased.

“This game was the game that defined who we are,” Kampe said. “This year will be a developing year. Between this year and next year we plan to get to the stage of being great.”

Newman ended with a huge 33 points, a career high on a career night for the sophomore.

When Newman was asked on how did he put on such a great performance, all he did was commend his coach and teammates.

”Just preparation. I got a lot of shots up during previous games,” Newman said. “Coach pushed the team to do our best.”  

After receiving a win at Home against Green Bay, Oakland prepares for their next game against cross town rival Detroit Mercy.
