WXOU sat down with OU’s director of the journalism program Garry Gilbert and Oakland University’s professor and chair of the political science department Dr. David Dulio to talk about the recent Steven Spielberg film “The Post.”
“Post” follows Katharine Graham (Meryl Streep) and Ben Bradlee’s (Tom Hanks) discovery of the Pentagon Papers and her decision to publish them in the Washington Post.
Let’s introduce the guests of the panel:
Garry J. Gilbert, a media reporter and editor for more than 40 years, is the director of the journalism program at Oakland University. Gilbert holds B.A. and M.A. degrees in U.S. History from Oakland. He was named winner of the university’s Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award in 2000. Gilbert was invited to join the journalism faculty at Michigan State University in 2006 as a visiting editor and lecturer. He returned to Oakland as journalism program director in 2007. In 2014, Gilbert earned national and state explanatory journalism awards for his published article Trauma & Triumph about the science of post-traumatic growth. Gilbert is adviser to The Oakland Post, OU’s independent student newspaper. He is also a past president of the Michigan Associated Press Editors Association, a former trustee of the Birmingham Unitarian Church and the Oakland Alumni Association.
David A. Dulio is professor and chair of the political science department at Oakland University where he teaches courses on campaigns and elections, congress, political parties, interest groups, and other areas of American politics generally. His published work includes “Campaigns from the Ground Up” (Paradigm Publishers 2015), “Cases in Congressional Campaigns: Riding the Wave” (Routledge 2011), and “For Better or Worse? How Professional Political Consultants are Changing Elections in the United States” (SUNY Press 2004). He has written dozens of articles and book chapters on subjects ranging from the role of professional consultants in US elections to campaign finance. Dulio is also a former American Political Science Congressional Fellow on Capitol Hill where he worked in the U.S. House of Representatives Republican Conference for former US Rep. J.C. Watts, Jr. (R-OK).
