Barbarian (2022) Spoiler Free Review

A young woman discovers the rental home she booked is already occupied by a stranger. Against her better judgment, she decides to spend the night but soon discovers there's a lot more to fear than just an unexpected house guest.

Not many recent horror movies have scared me and kept me on edge. Barbarian, written by Zach Cregger, was wonderfully crafted to both scare and humor the audience. Going into the film without any prior knowledge is honestly one of the best things you can possibly do. Even the trailer is wonderfully done, without spoiling any major plot points and still giving a brief introduction to the movie and some of the main characters. In order to understand what I am saying, you would have to see the movie for yourself!

Not much is explained and that adds so much more to the experience. The entire audience audibly gasped, laughed, and shouted “NO!” as events took place throughout the movie. The characters are incredibly realistic, and the movie doesn’t take itself too seriously when it comes to dialogue. I think having a less serious approach makes the scenarios and setting seem so much more realistic. All the events that take place in the movie could be entirely possible in real life, and that just makes everything so much more unnerving. The beginning is a little slow, but that is justifiable to understand the plot and characters. As the movie progresses, you begin to question more and more things and the pieces slowly fall into place as time goes on.

Overall, I would rate this movie an 8.5/10. The acting is wonderful, the story is original, and the gore is incredibly realistic. The music was also incredible, with intense screeches and enormous bass at the perfect moments. Some of the digital effects were not the best and you could clearly tell when some things were animated using CGI versus practical effects. I recommend everyone watch this movie, as it is one of the best horror movies I have seen in quite a while. Considering it's almost October, now is the perfect time to go to the theater and watch Barbarian!

I would like to thank Allied Global Marketing and MJR Troy for giving me the opportunity to attend the showing.
