The Oakland Golden Grizzlies began their Horizon League season with a home win vs the Northern Kentucky Norse 89-79.

The Golden Grizzlies jumped out to a 15 point lead with 2:47 left in the first quarter with a score of 22-7. In that stretch, the Oakland defense held NKU to 3-8 FG, 0-2 FT, and 6 turnovers to jumpstart the early lead.

Oakland would maintain a comfortable lead going into halftime, up by 10 with the score being 41-31.

However, in the final minute of the 3rd quarter, the Norse made a push to get their first lead of the game since being up 2-0 in the opening minute of play. NKU was 13-19 FG, 2-2 3PT, and 4-8 FT in that quarter, much more efficient than the previous two quarters of play.

This lead would not last long as Oakland outscored the Norse 28-16 in the 4th quarter run to regain control of the game, before finishing the game off with a pair of made free throws.

Stats of the game:

  • Alexis Johnson and Markyia McCormick scored

  • 21 and 20 points respectively. Johnson's 21 points is a new season high!

  • Miriam Ibezim had 13 rebounds, with 8 being offensive rebounds along with 5 steals, all season highs!

  • Brooke Quarles-Daniels having 18 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals
