As of Wednesday, August 13th, Oakland University has introduced AI tools to the University's workspace license. Before this inclusion, Microsoft 365 was the only addition to the workspace license, saving students money each month. However, with the addition of AI applications, students and faculty alike may find less than optimal ways to use them. Most professors around campus strictly prohibit the use of any generative or corrective AI because of the lack of thought it takes to use those programs. Besides this, AI is not fully developed, leaving keys to answers out, and generating faulty sources (which may not even exist).
On top of this, Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat is currently being implemented into this plan as well. This may pose issues for professors who require students to turn in their documents in a Word format. Professors can outright outlaw AI in the classroom, but how effective will it be when everyone has easier access to these programs? Will staff embrace the change or continue to fight against the AI incursion? That remains to be seen...
